Why We Still Carry Cameras

A reflection on AI, authenticity, and what actually makes an image worth trusting.

It's a fair question now, in a way it wasn't five years ago: why hire someone to physically show up with a camera when a prompt can generate a passable version of almost anything in thirty seconds?

Here's the honest answer. A generated image can look like a mountain. It cannot have been to the mountain. It cannot know that the wind changes direction at that ridge around 4 p.m., or that the light hits the far peak two minutes before it hits the near one, or that the trail switches back exactly where it does because that's where the rock let it. Those aren't details you can prompt your way into. They're details you only get by being there, cold, at the wrong hour, more times than the one time that worked.

The same is true of a client's business. No tool knows that a casino floor has a specific hum at 11 p.m. on a Friday that's different from a Tuesday, or that a brewery's owner talks with his hands when he's excited about a new can design, or that a lawn care crew's trucks are parked at a very specific angle every single morning because that's just how the owner likes it. That kind of specificity is what makes a photograph, a brand, or a piece of writing feel like it's actually about the thing it claims to be about, instead of a good guess at what that thing generally looks like.

None of this is an argument against using new tools where they genuinely help — plenty of the software behind this studio's workflow didn't exist a decade ago, and none of that history gets romanticized here. It's an argument for what a camera, a truck, and a full tank of gas still do that nothing else does yet: put a real person in a real place long enough to notice the thing that wasn't in the brief.

The camera doesn't get carried out of nostalgia. It gets carried because showing up is still the only way to find the detail that makes a story true instead of just plausible. That's the actual product being sold here — not a photograph, not a logo file, but the fact that someone went and looked first.
